GPs flock to the PHN's first NDIS event
Almost 80 GPs and practice nurses attended Brisbane North PHN’s first information evening about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) on Tuesday 6 February 2018.
From July 2018, the NDIS will become available to people living in Brisbane. Participants can apply to enter the NDIS up to six months prior, so GPs may be asked to provide evidence to support access requests for their patients.
Focusing on how to access the scheme, the event presented an opportunity to gauge the level of awareness and understanding of the NDIS. It also highlighted the central role GPs play in supporting their patients requesting access to the scheme, and the need for ongoing practical information to help both GPs and patients understand the NDIS.
A speaker from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) introduced the NDIS and then the PHN facilitated a panel discussion. The panel featured representatives from the NDIA, Queenslanders with Disability Network and a NDIS participant representative who shared invaluable feedback and their personal story in accessing the NDIS.
In anticipation of our next information evening in May 2018, the PHN is looking at what practical information and resources are needed to equip GPs and their patients to navigate the NDIS.
